Overview
MITSUBISHI took the decision it would steer a conservative styling path with the latest CG Lancer that was introduced to Australia in mid-2002. The Lancer matches its main small-car rivals in dimensions and offers a standard 2.0-litre engine to tempt buyers away from the largely 1.8-litre opposition. The sedan-only CG Lancer is bigger, stronger and offers more passenger and luggage space than the still-available CE models. It also projects a classier feel, with a well-presented interior including an attractive, quality dash layout and praiseworthy attention to detail. The body-kitted VR-X looks the part, but is not something in which to go out hot-hatch hunting.

CE Lancer MR coupe
August 1996-concurrent

GOING on sale in July, 2002, the new CG Lancer - at least initially - is available only in four-door sedan configuration, while the previous generation CE model soldiers on in GLi sedan, GLi and MR coupe and GLXi wagon forms. So the closest predecessor for the current Lancer VR-X sedan is either the CE Lancer VR-X coupe or the CE Lancer MR coupe (pictured), which went on sale with the Lancer CE in August, 1996, and is actually still available concurrently with the new CG models.
